To obtain credentials for testing the ISAN API in a Sandbox, please follow these three simple steps
Important: Do Not Use Sandbox data in Production: Information from the Sandbox API is strictly for testing. Never trust, store, or distribute ISANs obtained from the Sandbox, as they are simulated records and will not resolve in the official ISAN Registry.
Step 1: Prepare Your ISAN Account
You must have an active ISAN account before requesting API access.
- If you already have an ISAN Account: Simply email your existing Account Name/ID + Registration Agency Name to cs@isan.org with the subject line "Request for ISAN API Test Credentials."
-
If you do not have an ISAN Account: You must register first.
- Choose the account type that matches your testing needs:
- Reader Account: Select this if you only need to Search, Lookup, or Check/Validate ISANs.
- Registrant Account: Select this if you need to Register new ISANs or update metadata.
-
Action: Create your account with the TR Agency operated by ISAN-IA.
Important instructions for registration:
- Step3 - Billing information and Step 5 - Terms of Service: billing information is required to create an account (why? to match the production workflow) but fees and billing are not applicable to Sandbox.
- Step 4 - Account options: ensure you select the correct account type (Reader vs. Registrant)
- Step 4 - Account options: in the Message field, specify that your account is intended for API testing.
- Choose the account type that matches your testing needs:
Step 2: Sign the Test Agreement
Once your account is verified, ISAN-IA will send you the ISAN API Test User Agreement via our electronic signature module. This is a lightweight confirmation of the testing terms.
Step 3: Receive Your Credentials
After you sign the agreement, your unique API credentials (Login/Token) will be emailed to you, and you can begin testing.
