How does the ISAN affect copyright registration?
The ISAN is an identification number without any legal implication or meaning. The scope of the ISAN standard states that the issuance of an ISAN does not provide evidence of the ownership of rights in a work.
However, including ISAN in copyright records insures the accuracy of the copyright registration. In 2018, the US Copyright Office upgraded its electronic registration system with ISAN and noted that if applicants want to ensure that the U.S. Copyright Office retains a precise record of what was submitted for registration, they are encouraged to include an international standard number in the application if one has been assigned to the work.
